This blog was created with the intent to inspire others to partake in the ancient DNA revolution. As a result, all information provided in this blog will be conveyed in a thorough manner so those new to the subject will be able to develop an understanding of ancient DNA analysis and its applications.
What are Archaeogenetics?
The term "Archaeogenetics" refers to the application of population genetics to ancient DNA samples. As defined by Colin Renfrew, it refers to "the study of the past by use of the techniques of molecular genetics" This area of study is interdisciplinary, existing at the intersection of genetics and archaeology.
Why Archaeogenetics?
When applied to the study of human development, archeaogenetics allow human migrations to be viewed with exceptional clarity. While migrations can be tracked through archaeology, the study of material culture does not reveal the demographic impact that a migrating population had on other populations- only genetics can do that.
Integrating aDNA into a larger historical context
Archaeogenetics can be used in tandem with archaeology and history to gain a better understanding of the ancient world. Ancient DNA can be used to better understand demographic history, providing archaeologists and historians with trove of valuable information. By attempting to understand the past through various disciplines, one can develop a holisitc conception of human development and history. See more
